Canon vs Nikon

Please note this is based on my own personal opinions. If you are debating on which brand of camera to buy I highly recommend renting before buying!

I’ve been shooting with a Canon 7D and while I do love my camera it was time to upgrade to a full frame. I debated alot about switching over to Nikon and it was a tough decision to make!  I love the vibrant color I get with Canon and feel like sooc the colors are richer and deeper but the focus system is lacking. The only way I could assure I was getting things in focus was to manually select my focus point every time.  And still there have been many times I’ve opened up an image to find it soft and unusable.  I rented the Mark ii and it seemed even worse with it! For those of you who don’t know the Canon Mark ii has 9 focus points, and the 7D has 19…the D700 51!  I know there are so many photographers out there whose work is amazing and they shoot with the Mark ii but I’ve also noticed alot of them are primarily wedding photographers…maybe its just my imagination though.  😉  I don’t mind manually selecting focus points but when you photograph alot of kids its tough!  Those little boogers are fast!  😉

Now that I’ve had the D700 a few days and have had time to play with it I am absolutely in love.  I will say it has taken some getting used to! The menu is so much different and finding how to switch settings took some time. The more I get the hang of it, the more I love it!  It handles in low light just like I imagined it would….even better, it can focus in low light!  Something I have had trouble with in the past even though the 7D was supposed to be great for low light.

I will miss the vibrant color that comes from Canon and skintones are certainly a little tricky but I’m slowly getting it. I feel like I would much rather adjust color and skintones in post processing rather than lose and image due to soft focus.

Here are a few comparison shots. Each of these is shot with the same settings and is straight out of the camera.

I hope this helps anyone who is debating which camera to choose! :)

I just made the same decision and I am still working on how to process the skin tones to get the same effect. Wondering if you would mind sharing what you are changing about your processing to get the rich skin tones?

Rebecca~I edit using Jessica Drossin textures! Her textures give the best warm tones! :)

I’ve been a Nikon shooter from the get go, and have discovered several of them have the ability to fine tune your color settings to produce more vibrant colors. My D300s and D200 both have an option to set the color to Vivid, which increases the saturation and contrast a bit. Also worth investing in is an Expodisc-to program correct white balance for each shoot. It’s super easy to use with the Nikon (vs. more complicated Canon), and will help cut down on color corrections in post.
